Sibling Voices Survey Infographic – Parent Version

Research findings about emotional well-being and parents’ perspectives.

About these findings

The Sibling Voices research included siblings ages 9–12, ages 13–17, and adults, as well as parents. The following figures come from the parent infographic; they describe this study, not an individual child’s diagnosis or risk.

Emotional experiences

At least 47% of young and adult siblings reported unhappiness at times or frequently. At least 53% of young siblings reported irritability or grumpiness. 35% of adult siblings reported previous treatment for clinical depression.

Worry and family responsibilities

79% of siblings ages 9–12 expressed fear that their sibling might die. Among adult siblings, 65% worried about the emotional toll of future caregiving, 70% worried about something bad happening in their care, and 67% worried about providing a fulfilling life.

Parents and siblings may see things differently

Depending on the subgroup, 24–58% of siblings’ responses indicated possible anxiety symptoms, compared with 14–38% of parents recognizing them. High sadness scores were reported by 42% of siblings ages 9–12, while 20% of parents recognized this level of sadness.

Knowledge and communication

The infographic reports associations between knowledge of a sibling’s condition and lower mood/anxiety scores or greater comfort talking about the diagnosis. These are survey findings, not proof that any activity will produce a particular outcome. See the original infographic for subgroup details and references.
